The horrific war that Trump and Netanyahu have launched against Iran is a further escalation of the instability & conflicts that imperialist domination and exploitation have inflicted on the people of the Middle East, for over a century. More significantly, however, it is the clearest sign yet of the growth of 21st century fascism on a world scale, and of the threat of total war. That is clearly and dangerously expressed in the actions of the current US and Israeli regimes, in their own countries and internationally.

The decision to go to war against Iran was determined by history. It has by far the largest land area and the largest population of the Middle East’s big oil producing countries. It is the oldest state in the region, with thousands of years of history, the imperialist powers have tried to carve it up and repeatedly intervened in its politics, and the outcome of its 1979 revolution was a defeat for western imperialism.

Iran and Imperialism

In the 1920s the British imperialists created and imposed the rule of the brutally repressive Pahlavi dynasty, deposing the previous royal dynasty. When an elected government in the early 1950s nationalized Iran’s oil industry, Britain and the US organised a coup and reinstated the second Pahlavi Shah.

Under the last Shah’s notoriously brutal rule, Iran was second only to Israel as the western imperialists’ ally & agent in the Middle East. Following his overthrow by the popular revolution in1979 the religious leaders (Ayatollahs) who the Shah had exiled, returned to Iran and used their authority to establish a theocratic state which became increasingly repressive.

Over the last 40 years, Iran has come under increasing pressure and sanctions from the US and its allies, and this has caused greater poverty among the Iranian people. In response, the regime has increased its authoritarian control and turned to Russia and China for support. The regime’s authoritarianism has been challenged by outbreaks of resistance that have shaken its authority but have been repressed by its considerable military power.

The western imperialist pressures on Iran are now more likely to preserve its authoritarian, theocratic regime than remove it. The great mass of the Iranian people knows better than to trust the imperialists false promises, and they have demonstrated that they have no intention of turning their country over to the western imperialists.

Why the US has gone to war

There are no rational reasons for this war at this time. It is deeply unpopular in America, even among Trump’s own supporters. The regional power of Iran has suffered a sharp decline, with the setbacks to Hezbollah & Hamas, and the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria. Iran poses no threat to the US.

This is Trump’s fascist war, and that is all it is. This fascist president’s only purpose in going to war against Iran at this time is to demonstrate to the world his unrestrained power of inhuman, fascistic destruction, to demonstrate – not  only to enemies but to unhappy former supporters – that their views are of no account, he is King of Kings.

And it worked quickly with the governments of western Europe. Keir Starmer led the pack, but one by one they dropped their initial ‘disapproval’ of the war on Iran and were converted to ‘co-operation.’ Only Spain has stood firm. Trump had taken a risk, confident that it would work, just as he was confident that China and Russia would not go to war for the sake of Iran. But that does not mean that he is secure; he is actually very vulnerable.

For the poor & oppressed of the Middle East and the whole world the most positive resolution of this war is the military defeat of the US and Israel.

Workers’ Action can Stop the War: Blockade all support & supplies for War against Iran

The movement in Britain that has marched for Palestine is still marching. Those who have built the mass anti-war movement of resistance to Starmer’s warmongering, defended Palestine Action, mobilised against fascists, and filled countless courtrooms are now on the streets demanding an immediate end to the US/Israeli war against Iran. Every time we march for Palestine we must be marching for Iran – One struggle! One fight!

All those progressive & anti-war forces in Britain, especially in the trade unions, must now organise blockades to undermine and disrupt the US/Israeli attack on Iran. We should act in the spirit of the dockworkers in European and Mediterranean ports who have blockaded arms shipments to Israel, but we must act more widely and creatively to stop, disrupt, or undermine the transport and delivery of any form of armaments, goods, services, and communications that could assist the attacks on Iran.

We must demand that our trade union leaders organise this campaign of action, or at least support and defend it, but we cannot wait for them or rely on them. The need for this action is urgent, so we have to organise rank-and-file action groups in our workplaces, whatever and wherever they are.

The Fight  Against Fascism

This fight is not simply a campaign against a war; nor is it just a fight against imperialist wars. It is a fight against fascism. We live at a time when the capitalist system is caught in a political and economic dead-end, when nothing seems to work, even while all the sciences are zooming ahead. Inequality has reached the greatest ever extremes in human history. For the first time fascism has taken power or is advancing rapidly in all the old imperialist countries at the same time.

That is the situation in Britain, in the US, France, Germany, Italy etc.

If we in Britain, as workers, refugees & immigrants, black, Asian & Muslim people, poor & oppressed people can build significant action against the US attack on Iran, we will have weakened our own racist, anti-working class government, and struck a major blow against Trump’s fascist programme in the US, and against fascism in this country and across Europe. That must be our aim.
